The role of the cystine/glutamate antiporter (CGAP) in controlling redox balance in ocular tissues

renita Martis Paris RedoxOxidative stress and damage plays a major role in the pathogenesis of age-related eye disease such as glaucoma, cataracts and age-related macular degeneration which causes progressive loss of vision. In other tissues, the cystine/glutamate antiporter (CGAP) is shown to be responsible for maintaining extracellular redox balance and providing cysteine for the synthesis of the antioxidant glutathione.

In this study, Dr Renita Martis and her team have used a knockout mouse that lacks the CGAP to study the role of CGAP the eye. From their studies, they demonstrate the importance CGAP plays in protecting ocular tissues from oxidative damage and maintaining a healthy eye.

During Paris Redox 2017, Dr Martis, from the University of Auckland, New Zealand will present this study during the special session on oxidative stress and ocular diseases.
